Starting the Scanning Software

Start Photoshop by clicking on the Start menu and clicking on the photoshop icon near the top of the menu. Once in Photoshop, choose "File" --> "Import" --> "Silverfast (Epson)".

Clearing Previous Settings

Next to the "Leave" button, there is a button which is labeled "Options" or "Reset". This same button changes into the "Reset All" button if the "Shift" key is pressed. To clear the settings of any previous users, hold down the "shift" key and click the "Reset All" button next to the "Leave" button.

Choosing a Preset

The "Frame-Set" menu contains a list of presets that provide useful starting points for setting up your scan. Begin by selecting an appropriate preset.

Cropping

Crop your image as you would in any other scanning software, by drawing a box around the portion of the image you would like to scan.

Color Adjustment

There are a number of color adjustment tools that can help you if the color in your scan looks dull. The first (going backwards from right to left) adjusts the color settings automatically. This is generally all that is needed to generate an excellent scan.

If your slide or film has particularly subtle color gradations you would like to capture, you may make further manual adjustments. The second tool is similar to the "Levels" tool in Photoshop, the third is similar to "Curves", and the fourth is quite similar to "Color Balance". Making manual adjustments in the scanning software will yield much more detailed scans than making the same adjustments later in Photoshop.

Save Your Image to Zip
After you are done scanning, save your image to zip disk in Photoshop. This is done by clicking "File" --> "Save". If you are using Zip100 disks, you should use the external zip drive because it is much faster than the internal when writing to Zip100 disks. The external drive has the drive letter "D:".
